8 Silent Signs of Kidney Disease

Kidney disease is often referred to as a “silent killer” because many people experience few or no symptoms in its early stages. The kidneys play a crucial role in filtering waste, balancing fluids, and maintaining overall health, so any dysfunction can have serious consequences. Detecting kidney disease early can help prevent further damage and lead to better management of the condition. Here are eight subtle signs that may indicate kidney disease.

1. Fatigue and Low Energy

When the kidneys are not functioning properly, they cannot effectively filter waste from the blood, leading to a buildup of toxins. This can cause feelings of fatigue and low energy. Additionally, kidney disease can lead to anemia (a deficiency of red blood cells), which also contributes to tiredness and weakness. Persistent fatigue, even after adequate rest, may signal an underlying issue with the kidneys.

2. Changes in Urination Patterns

One of the earliest and most noticeable signs of kidney disease is a change in urination habits. These changes can include:

  • requency increase: The need to urinate more frequently, particularly at night (nocturia).
  • Decreased frequency: Urinating less often or in smaller amounts than usual.
  • Foamy urine: Excessive bubbles in the urine could indicate the presence of protein, a sign of kidney damage.
  • Blood in urine: Hematuria, or blood in the urine, can be a sign of kidney disease or infection.

If you notice any changes in your urination patterns, it’s important to seek medical advice.

3. Swelling in the Ankles, Feet, or Hands

When kidney function declines, the body may struggle to remove excess fluid, leading to fluid retention. This often manifests as swelling (edema) in the ankles, feet, hands, or even around the eyes. The swelling may worsen as the day goes on or after prolonged periods of standing or sitting. Persistent or sudden swelling is a key sign of potential kidney dysfunction and should not be ignored.
